My Child Knows Letter Sounds. Why Can’t They Read a Word?

I point to the letters in map.

“What sound does this one make?”

“/m/.”

“And this one?”

“/a/.”

“And the last one?”

“/p/.”

All three answers are right. Then I ask, “So what word is it?”

The room goes quiet.

Sometimes he looks at the picture for help. Sometimes he repeats /m/ ... /a/ ... /p/ without ever reaching map.

The short answer

I used to think that if my child knew each sound, reading the word should be straightforward. It is not always. Knowing the pieces and putting them together are different things, and a beginning reader can be learning the second one while still getting the first one right.

Knowing letter sounds gives my child some of what he needs to decode a word. He still has to keep those sounds in order, join them, and recognize the spoken word they make. That extra step is called blending, and it needs practice of its own.

Letter sounds and blending are different jobs

When my child sees the letter m and says /m/, he is recalling a connection between a letter and a sound. That is important knowledge.

Reading map asks him to do more. He has to:

  1. look at the letters from left to right,
  2. recall the right sound for each one,
  3. keep those sounds in the right order,
  4. join the sounds together, and
  5. recognize the word they have just made.

That joining step is called blending. Using letter-sound relationships to work out a written word is called decoding.

The research supports teaching both. Letter sounds matter, and children also need direct practice applying those sounds in words.[1,2]

I still use listening games with my child because hearing the sounds in spoken words is useful. But when the goal is reading print, I make sure the sounds come back to the letters too. A 2024 meta-analysis found that oral-only sound instruction helped phonological awareness, but was less effective than print-based instruction and had smaller effects on word reading.[3]

So this gap does not mean the letter-sound practice was wasted. It means my child has some of the pieces and is still learning how they work together.

What the research looked at

The broad evidence comes from U.S. instructional guidance and meta-analyses covering preschool through the early school years.[1-3] They support explicit work with speech sounds, links between sounds and print, and direct practice applying those links in words. They do not suggest that knowing isolated letter sounds is the same as reading.

One smaller experiment addressed the precise problem that caught my attention: kindergartners who knew letter sounds but could not yet decode unfamiliar made-up words.[4] Their average age was 5 years 7 months. The public study record does not clearly report the recruitment region. That limits how specifically I can compare the sample with my own child’s school context.

What the researchers actually did

Researchers compared two ways of teaching the children to blend simple consonant-vowel-consonant nonwords. One group paused between the sounds, as in:

/m/ ... /a/ ... /p/

The other group kept sounds connected where they could be stretched, as in:

sssaaannn

After the children learned the trained items, the researchers tested whether they could use the method with unfamiliar words containing harder-to-blend stop consonants.

What they found

Children taught connected phonation learned the trained words more successfully and read more transfer words accurately than children taught to pause between sounds.[4] The error pattern suggested that pauses made it easier to lose the first sound before reaching the blend.

That result does not mean pauses explain every blending difficulty. It came from one focused experiment using nonwords and initially stretchable consonants. It does give me a practical technique worth trying: make the sounds easier to hear as one continuous word.

For map, that might sound like:

mmmaaap

Then say the word normally:

“Map.”

I am not asking my child to speak that way forever. I am building a temporary bridge between the individual sounds and the word he already knows.

A simple way to practice at home

I choose one written word made from sounds my child already knows. It should also be a word he knows when he hears it. Map, sat, mat, and sun may work, depending on which sound-spelling relationships he has learned.

This is what I try:

1. Model it first

I point to each letter from left to right as I slowly say the sounds. I keep the stretchable sounds going as I move into the next one.

For map: mmmaaap.

Then I say: “Map.”

I do not begin by testing. I let my child hear and see what blending looks like.

2. Try it together

We say the stretched word at the same time. I slide a finger under the letters as we go, then we say the complete word together.

If my child loses the word, I simply model it again. “Listen: mmmaaap. Map.”

3. Give them a turn

I ask, “Want to try this one?”

If the sounds remain separate, I join in softly. If my child guesses, I return to the letters instead of turning the moment into a correction battle.

“Let’s look at the sounds again.”

4. Stop while it still feels manageable

A few thoughtful attempts are enough for one little practice moment. There is no useful prize for continuing until either of us is frustrated.

The goal is not to make my child perform on command. It is to make the process clearer.

Three things that can make blending harder

The word contains spellings the child has not learned

A three-letter word is not automatically an easy word. Was, one, and the are short, but my beginning reader cannot work them out by applying only the most common sound for each letter.

So I try to choose written words that use sound-spelling relationships my child has already been taught. Authoritative reading guidance recommends teaching these relationships systematically and giving children direct practice using them to decode words.[1]

The sounds have extra “uhs” attached

Some consonant sounds are easy to stretch, such as /m/, /s/, and /f/. Others stop quickly, such as /p/, /t/, and /k/.

I try to say the sound itself rather than adding a vowel. The letter m represents /m/, not “muh.” If my child hears “muh – a – puh,” the result is much harder to recognize as map.[4]

Perfect pronunciation is not the point. I am simply keeping extra sounds from crowding the word.

The child is being asked to guess

A picture can help my child understand a story, but it can also hide what is happening during decoding. If the word is map beside a drawing of a map, a correct answer might come from the picture rather than the letters.

During a short blending practice, I let the letters do the work. After my child has read the word, I bring the meaning back in: “Yes, map. This map shows us where to go.”

That keeps reading connected to meaning without making the picture the answer key.

How confident should we be?

I am confident in the broad conclusion that children need practice applying sound-spelling knowledge to written words, not only recalling sounds in isolation. That rests on systematic guidance and meta-analytic evidence.[1-3,5]

I am more cautious about connected phonation as the answer for an individual child. The experiment fits this question unusually well, but it is still one study with a specific group and task.[4] A child may also be struggling because the spellings are unfamiliar, the spoken word is unknown, the sounds are not produced cleanly, or another part of reading needs support.

What if this does not work right away?

I try not to assume that my child is lazy, not listening, or “just guessing” on purpose. Blending places several demands on a new reader at once. Children also arrive at this point with different language experience, instruction, memory, attention, and sound awareness.

I try to notice exactly where the process breaks down.

  • Can my child quickly recall the sounds in this word?
  • Can he blend the word when I say the sounds aloud, without showing letters?
  • Can he follow the letters from left to right?
  • Does he hear the word when I blend it, but lose it when he tries alone?
  • Is the word actually built from spellings he has learned?

Those observations are more useful than deciding that my child “cannot read.” They can also help a teacher see what kind of support is needed.

If the difficulty continues despite clear instruction and practice, or if I have broader concerns about my child’s speech, language, hearing, or learning, I can talk with his teacher or another qualified professional. One problem with one word cannot tell me whether a child has dyslexia or any other condition.

What I’m taking home

The change for me is small. When my child can say every sound but cannot find the word, I no longer repeat the same test more loudly. I model the blend, keep stretchable sounds connected, and give him another low-pressure attempt.

Blending is important, but it is not the whole point of reading. I try to keep that in view when a practice moment starts to feel too narrow.

My child is learning to turn print into language and meaning. He also needs vocabulary, conversation, knowledge, stories, and plenty of chances to understand and enjoy what words can do. Major reviews of reading research describe decoding as a foundation, not the finished building.[1,5]

So I keep reading books aloud. (Side note: Perhaps I will do some research on that down the line. We as parents receive recommendations to read for our children, I wonder the specific effects of that..) I keep talking about curious words. I keep letting my child enjoy stories that are far beyond what he can decode independently.

And when we practice a word like map, I try to remember what we are really doing. We are not drilling three isolated sounds. We are helping my child hear the moment when three small pieces become one meaningful word.

That moment may take more modeling than I expected. It is still a very real step toward reading.
